Eastgate School welcomes all pupils whatever their learning abilities or levels of need. The school will endeavour to provide for each child access to the full curriculum.
All classes are on the ground floor, with exits suitable for wheelchairs. There is a disabled toilet unit.
The school aims to provide a well organised and caring environment in which every child has an equal opportunity to achieve his/her potential. The governors will ensure that this applies to children with special educational needs by following the guidance set out in the Code of Practice and adopted by the LEA.
A named member of staff is responsible for the day to day provision of education for pupils with special educational needs at school, which will include:
- Advising teachers and welfare assistants.
- Taking the lead in managing provision for pupils with special needs.
- Updating and overseeing the records of pupils with special needs.
- Advising on the deployment of support staff.
- Liaising with parents, partner schools and external agencies.
The overall aims are:-
- To ensure that those children admitted and on roll within the school who are in need of special requirements for their education are catered for within the main stream of schooling to the best of the School's and the LEA's ability.
- That the school will provide an environment in which children with special educational needs should be integrated with their peers and enjoy a broad educational curriculum.
- That all school staff will be aware of the special needs of particular children and be aware of the procedures used within the school to identify and cater for those pupils.
