All pupils receive equal regard and equality of opportunity in
learning. The curriculum is planned to promote spiritual, moral,
cultural and physical development consistent with the Local Education
Authority's curriculum policy. The school uses the Qualification and
Curriculum Authority schemes of work.
The pupils follow a balanced curriculum and are taught in accordance
with the requirements of the National Curriculum. Maths and English are
taught every day following the guidance of the National Literacy
Strategy and the National Numeracy Strategy. They study for an agreed
length of time the following areas of learning:
| Core Areas |
Foundation Areas |
Other Areas |
Maths
English
Science
ICT |
History
Geography
Technology
Music
PE
RE |
Citizenship
Ethnic & Cultural Diversity
Personal, Social & Health Education |
Although these subjects are listed separately, we believe that
children's learning is at times better achieved through topic work
where areas of learning can be combined. Sex education at 10-11 years
forms part of the curriculum within the Personal and Social education
of the school. Parents have the right to ask that their children do not
receive these particular lessons which are usually given by the school
nurse.
The school follows the 2006 Norfolk RE agreed syllabus and a copy is
available in school to view. Any parent who wishes to withdraw their
child from RE lessons or the devotional part of the daily collective
worship is invited to speak with the Headteacher. Children withdrawn
will normally be with a teaching assistant for that time.
Swimming instruction is introduced in Year Three as part of the PE
programme. Children in years three and four swim at Greyfriars School
pool and children in years five and six swim at St. James' Pool. At
present opportunities for music tuition of stringed instruments (eg
violin and cello) normally arise from year three. Lessons are given in
small groups in school time by visiting music staff.
